Spatial recording and analysis of the urban and rural soundscapes of Naxos
Summary:
The study focuses on the investigation of the soundscapes of Naxos Island through the recording of 84 locations using the Ambisonics recording technique, the classification and analysis of their content, as well as their interactive presentation through an immersive playback application created within the MaxMSP programming environment. The first section of the study references the most significant theoretical points of soundscape science and acoustic ecology, while the second section presents the main methodologies for studying soundscapes. The third section defines the framework of the research on Naxos soundscapes, presenting the recording method and equipment, as well as the immersive playback application. The fourth section presents the classification of sound sources and the statistical data of sound pressure measurements, along with some indicative spectral analyses. The study concludes with a summarizing commentary on the investigation and a brief mention of possible research extensions on the subject.
