Association of emotional overeating with burnout and anxiety in nurses
Summary:
Introduction: Burnout is a common phenomenon among health professionals. In particular, nurses are in the "high risk" group for the manifestation of the most common psychiatric problems, such as anxiety and depression. At the same time, there are many who have an eating disorder.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to cover literature gaps, for this reason it will study the correlation of emotional overeating with burnout and stress of nurses, who work in cyclical hours and non-cyclical hours.
Method: The research participants were 227 nurses from primary and secondary care. The psychometric tools administered were: the Burnout Scale - MBI, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - HADS and the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire - EMAQ. All statistical analyzes were performed using the SPSS-28 statistical package.
Results: According to statistical analyses, there is no statistically significant relationship between emotional overeating and burnout subscales (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal fulfillment). Furthermore, there is no statistically significant relationship between anxiety and depression, as with age, gender, working hours and years of service.
Conclusions: It is necessary to carry out further research with a larger sample of nurses from different countries. At the same time, to include other mental disorders besides anxiety and depression.
