The analysis of the role of the participation of the Armed Forces in the management and response to natural and human-made disasters. Case study: Fires 2023/Floods of Mandra 2017
Summary:
The involvement of the Armed Forces in managing and responding to both natural and man-made disasters plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of a country's population. Their involvement is often sought when the magnitude of the disaster exceeds the capacity of civilian agencies and resources. These two disasters are a brake on the orderly functioning of modern societies. An important factor for mitigating their effects on the anthropogenic and natural environment is their correct management as much as possible. The involvement of the armed forces in disaster management and response is a complex and multifaceted issue involving various considerations, challenges and benefits. Due to the fact that the climate crisis is present and the frequency of disasters will be increasing in the coming years, the involvement of the armed forces in managing and dealing with them may have a similar relationship. Disasters that occur on an annual basis affect human communities as well as natural ecosystems.
In this thesis, an attempt will be made to analyze basic concepts directly related to natural and man-made disasters, identifying their special characteristics. An extensive reference will be made to the phases of crisis and disaster management and to the presence of the Armed Forces with the ultimate aim of protecting citizens against disasters. In addition, disasters that occurred in the Greek area will be studied with their impact on society, focusing on the participation of the Armed Forces. Finally, conclusions will be drawn for the possible improvement of the already existing connection between the Armed Forces and disasters with the ultimate goal of further improving planning practices both before and after the disaster.
