Dodecanese and Cycladic songs : siblings, cousins or distant relatives?
Summary:
Greek traditional music can be distinguished, from a musicological point of view, into island and continental music. Due to the significant differences in formal scales and rhythmic approaches, each has its own unique musical feel. For example, music with basic, fast rhythms is common on the islands, but more complex, slow rhythms are common on the mainland. However is island Greek music the same throughout the Aegean, or does each island cluster have its own distinct and distinctive musical tradition?
In the following paper we will compare 20 Dodecanese songs with 20 Cycladic songs to find their similarities and differences. This musical analysis is done manually, using viewpoints, namely duration, interval duration, pitch, interval pitch, contour and link viewpoint (contour, duration). Gor the comparison we also use various musical elements
such as rhythm, ambitus, the relation of shorter and longer value, shorter and longer interval, the begging of the songs in position or in lift, the melodic initial movement and the subsequent melodic movements. In addition, the paper includes an interview with Mr. Kyriakos Gouventas, who answers some questions about why Dodecanese and Cycladic songs have similarities or differences and why the two regions share several songs.
