Fibrinolytic system disorders during the perinatal period
Summary:
The balance between bleeding and clotting is a very well regulated and controlled function, by several factors. For checking the proper functioning, of the fibrinolytic system, there has been developed various laboratory methods, classical and global. Also to protect from bleeding that can be caused by the disruption of the fibrinolytic system, there have been developed antifibrinolytic agents with their administration protocols for every circumstance.
Pregnancy is a condition that naturally tends towards thrombosis. However, the existences of various clinical entities, that can co – exist with pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, can deregulate the fibrinolytic system more and cause bleeding. For this reason, there must be laboratory monitoring for interfering on time.
In conclusion, premature newborns are another group, whose fibrinolytic capacity should be monitored in the laboratory, as they can develop bleeding complications.
