Retinal vascular occlusion after COVID-19 vaccination: A literature review.
Summary:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is one of the most critical pandemics for the humanity. Therefore new vaccines were developed to prevent the disease from spreading. The possible adverse effects from vaccination was a great cause of concern among the researchers and physicians. Systemic vascular thrombotic events and retinal vascular occlusions are a well-described complication of COVID-19. However, retinal vascular occlusive events have also been reported after administration of COVID-19 vaccines. This review provides insights into the possible association between reported retinal vascular occlusive events and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. However, further investigations are required to identify the link between potential causality and pathological mechanisms.
