Pathological narcissism and subjective well-being
Summary:
The purpose of this study is to investigate pathological narcissism and subjective well-being in the adult population in Greece. Pathological narcissism includes narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability. Subjective well-being includes the satisfaction one receives from his/her life and the pleasant affect over the absence of unpleasant affect. The present study was an online cross-sectional study, while the recruitment technique applied was the snowball sampling. The sample was 378 adults who completed two self-report questionnaires, Brief-Pathological Narcissism Inventory (B-PNI) and Well-Being Scale (WeBS). The findings showed that men, undergraduate students, single and young people have higher scores in pathological narcissism. On the other hand, master’s degree owners have higher levels of subjective well-being from high school graduates, bachelor degree owners and undergraduate students. A low negative correlation was found between pathological narcissism and subjective well-being, while a moderate negative correlation was found between narcissistic vulnerability and subjective well-being, a finding which is consistent with other scientific researches. Finally, multiple regression analysis showed that hedonic well-being, age, gender, eudaimonic well-being and subjective well-being affect pathological narcissism, while contingent self-esteem, exploitativeness, self-sacrificing self-enhancement and hiding the self (sub-scales of pathological narcissism) affect subjective well-being.
