Prevalence of anaemia, iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia in a population sample of adult women of childbearing age in Greece
Summary:
Background: Anaemia is a public health problem that affects populations in
both developing and developed countries. Αpproximately 50% of the cases of
anaemia are considered to be because iron deficiency. The most vulnerable
population groups are children and women in reproductive age.
Aims: The present study is aimed to examine the prevalence of anaemia, iron
deficiency(ID) and iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in women of reproductive
age in Greece.
Population: 375 women of reproductive age (18-49) from Athens in Greece.
Methods: Of 375 women, 168 had sufficient data for the analysis of anaemia
and iron status. Anaemia was defined as Hb<120 g/l, ID as serum
ferritin<15μg/L and, as IDA Hb<120 g/l and serum ferritin <15 μg/L. Identified
hematological parameters: RBC, HGB, HCT , MCV , MCH, MCHC και RDWCV in hematology analyzer XS- 1000i, serum Fe , CRP in Cobas Integra 400
plus analyzer and serum ferritin, vitamin D in Cobas e-411 analyzer.
Results: The prevalence of anaemia, iron deficiency and iron deficiency
anaemia was 11.9%, 14.8% and 1% respectively. Mediterranean diet, body
mass index and luck of vitamin D are not associated with anaemia and iron
deficiency. We had set the P-value <0.05 as significance level.
