The theory of the soul in the light of Platonic Eros in Plato's "Symposium" and "Phaedrus"
Summary:
The present study investigates the psychological dimension of love in Plato’s two predominantly erotic dialogues, the Symposium and the Phaedrus. In particular, the erotic phenomenon is examined in the light of the ascending course of the soul towards ideas, as expressed by Diotima in the Symposium and the myth of the chariot in Phaedrus. The first two chapters analyse these two erotic dialogues always within the main theme of the paper. In the third chapter we discover the tripartite distinction of the soul and the interactions of the parts with each other. In chapter four we move on to the psychology of love and the path to ultimate good. Finally, the conclusion incorporates the results of our study and clarifies all aspects of love in its ascent to the world of ideas.
