Differentiation of self in the family of origin and students' career decision making
Summary:
ABSTRACT
Self-differentiation, a structural construct of Bowen's theory, in relevant empirical studies appears to be predictive of students' career identity and career indecision. However, the specific mechanisms operating within family relationships between self-differentiation and indecision regarding the young person's career choice have received little investigation internationally. The purpose of the present study, which is carried out for the first time in the context of the Greek reality, is to investigate whether the Self-Differentiation of students and university students in their family of origin is related to Self-Efficacy and Triangulation and ultimately how these three factors may influence their career decision making.
In total, 271 2nd grade high school students and 606 undergraduate students from various university departments in the greater Attica region participated in this research.
The findings of this study show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the four dimensions of Self-Differentiation, i.e., Emotional Reactivity, Emotional Cut-off, Fusion with Others, “I” position and the three dimensions of difficulty of career decision making, namely, Career Immaturity Attitude, Obscurity of Interests and Barriers imposed by family.
Furthermore, it was observed that a common predictive factor of career indecision for the students and undergraduates examined, is Triangulation in the nuclear family. Finally, this study pinpointed that higher levels of “I” position predicted lower career indecision, higher levels of self-efficacy, and lower levels of Triangulation, while self-efficacy was found to be positively correlated with Differentiation of Self and negatively with Triangulation.
