Summary:
The aim of this thesis is the comparative study of Seneca's De ira and Plutarch's Περὶ ἀοργησίας.
These philosophical treatises are examined regarding the philosophical ideas of their authors and three
common literary techniques (ethicological examples, 'descriptio' and metaphors), whose role is proved
to be principal for the dissemination and reinforcement of philosophers' arguments. More precisely,
I examine Seneca's and Plutarch's theory about the essence of anger, its origin and various methods
of controling it through the lens of the ideology of each author's philosophical school. After that I pinpoint
the role of 'ethical examples' in the promotion of each philosopher's theory and I comment on the historical
and social factors that influenced authors' choice of examples. In addition to that my comparative study
deals with the rhetorical technique of 'descriptio', which reveals the influence of physiognomy on both
philosophers and their purpose to convince of their ideas' validity. Finally, I analyze in detail both the
conceptual and the literary metaphors of anger highlighting their crucial role in the differentiated reflection
and emotion's description made by Seneca and Plutarch.
