Animals, Ethics and Christianity
Summary:
In recent years, both our society and the scientific community have taken a special interest in the field of Animal Ethics. Animal experimentation, vegetarian movements, animal treatment protocols, and the acceptance of values that uphold animal welfare and well-being have attracted the interest of physicians, biologists, philosophers, sociologists, lawyers, and theologians.
The attention of all scientific groups, which have been focused on human life, is now also directed towards animals, even to the point of questioning the ontological difference between humans and animals.
Naturally, a storm of reactions came to counter these views, and sociologists, philosophers, lawyers and theologians were quick to take a stand on this burning issue, giving new dimensions to what is permissible and what is not, to experiments and to the treatment of animals in general.
In our paper we will attempt to study the position of Christianity, on these burning issues and the ethics with which the Christian faith treats animals. Biblical and hagiographical references and patristic texts will illuminate our research, seeking to demonstrate that Christianity, always unchanged through the ages, upholds and reinforces the proper position of human beings towards every creature of God and especially animals.
