Philosophy as the art of living. The commanding principle of the creation of self in Nietzsche and Foucault
Summary:
The aim of this essay is to highlight philosophy as the art of living. It attempts to shine a light on philosophy as the commanding principle of the creation of self, though the texts of Nietzsche and Foucault. The French thinker, taking as a starting point the idea of care of the shelf and spiritual exercises, turns towards antiquity with an interest mostly in the relationship between the subject, the truth and the power. He considers these two notions as requisite to the creation and governance of self. For Nietzsche, the road to the creation of self is one that passes mainly through the critique of values, the rejection of norms and the care of body. Thus, he introduces ideas such as eternal recurrence, amor fati, and the ubermensch. Pierre Hadot’s interpretation is a through line in many parts of the essay, as his contribution was definitive in the study of philosophy as the art of living and in the analysis of the matters on which both philosophers worked.
