The settlements of the Peloponnese during the Greek Revolution: space, population and habitation
Summary:
The PhD thesis examines the geographical distribution of settlements and population in the Peloponnese during the Greek Revolution. Commencing from the conclusion of the Revolution, the thesis investigates whether the relative depiction concerning the settlement and population composition of the Peloponnesian region during this period primarily stems from the preceding ten-year war or if it is indicative of broader interpretative phenomena in terms of their nature and duration.
To address the central question, a systematic identification and cartographic mapping of approximately 1,800 place names contained in the population records conducted between 1828 and 1830 by the Kapodistrian administration, as well as the corresponding material gathered by the French Scientific Expedition of the Peloponnese, were undertaken. Simultaneously, the research extensively utilized a variety of written (both census and non-census) and spatial sources.
Through the processing of the material, the quantitative analysis of the data and a number of original thematic maps created by the author using Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the research systematically and in depth reconstructs the settlement map of the Peloponnese during this period and analyzes issues pertaining to the administrative geography of the Greek territory, the reliability of the sources available for the population during this period, and ultimately, the transformations of the settlement patterns and the distribution of the population in the geographical space area over the long duration.
