The Transformation and Division of the Physiography Museum of the University of Athens (1858-1908).
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to present the operation and transformation of the Physiography Museum of the University of Athens from its establishment in 1858 until 1908. The study of this particular topic is an attempt to identify the causes and factors that led to the division of the Museum, in an effort to understand the evolution and ultimate formation of four different museums: the Botanical Museum, the Zoological Museum, the Mineralogy and Petrology Museum, and the Geology and Paleontology Museum. Extensive archival material preserved in the Mineralogy and Zoology Museums of the University, relevant documents provided by the University's Historical Archive, digital sources in the "Pergamos" electronic repository, and broader bibliographic sources were thoroughly researched for this work. Thematic and chronological classification was carried out in the archive to facilitate the gathering of information on the collections, collection policies, museum staff, and overall organisation. The collections served as means of fostering national consciousness and cultivating scientific knowledge, primarily enriched through donations, exchanges, and acquisitions, and they supported the University of Athens in maintaining a dignified presence among other universities in the European area. The Museum's finances were fully dependent on both the overall economic condition of the University and the social, political, and economic conditions of the country. The most decisive role in the transformation was played by the Museum's staff and particularly the relationship between the curators and the collections. The science of physiography, the emergence of scientific journals and manuals, the integration of natural history collections into universities, and the development and teaching of natural sciences in general, both domestically and internationally, are also topics examined in this study.
