Gender identities in greek trap music
Summary:
This thesis investigates gender identitiesin the lyrics of modern Greek trap music. More
specifically, the central aim of the research is the examination of the ways, in which
femininity and masculinity are represented in trap lyrics. For this study, 39 songs/texts
were used in order to explore the discourses that are (re)produced, the clarification of
their targeting and how gendered people and their roles are represented and given
meaning through them. Thus, critical discourse analysis was used as analysis method
and, more specifically, Fairclough’s socio-cultural approach (1992). Through our
analysis, we conclude that mainly stereotypical gender identities and performances are
(re)produced, as well as the majority of discourses found seem to confirm the broader
order of discourse related to dominant gender ideologies.
