The Presentation and Representation of Animals in the Cultural Geography of Greece: A Study of Greek Poets and Tragic Playwrights.
Summary:
The present dissertation is conducted within the framework of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program titled "Animals: Ethics, Law, Welfare" at the University of Athens, in close collaboration with the Pasteur Institute. The primary objective of this research is to identify, record, analyze, and examine the deeper meanings derived from the appearance and representation of animals in the cultural geography of Greece, through the examination of the works of Greek poets and tragedians. The aim is to fully understand the relationship between Greeks and nature and animals, as well as to investigate how this bond is portrayed in their poetic and dramatic production.
In this context, the dissertation attempts to capture this interaction by analyzing various aspects of poetic creation and dramatic discourse of Greek poets and tragedians, as well as the conditions and intellectual climate of their era. Furthermore, it explores the ethical aspects related to the relationship between humans and animals in ancient Greek society and how they are depicted in their works.
To conduct the research, methods of text analysis, historical research, and anthropological approaches are employed, while the collected material covers the period from antiquity to the late Byzantine era. This endeavor is essential for understanding the relationship between humans and nature in ancient Greek civilization and for highlighting the richness of the poetic and dramatic production of the ancient Greeks.
