Behaviors related to internet addiction in association with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder in adolescents and young adults: a systematic review
Summary:
The ability to access the internet for the general population worldwide is constantly increasing. Accordingly, eating disorders are an issue of major importance internationally due to their economic and social consequences and their potentially life-threatening symptomatology. Adolescence and young adulthood are the life stages in which eating disorders and problematic internet use disorders often appear for the first time. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the direction of the association between the occurrence or non-occurrence of eating disorders and the occurrence or non-occurrence of problematic internet use behaviors. The research was based on the PRISMA guidelines and took place from November 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. The following databases were used to conduct the research: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, PsychInfo. Overall, there is a positive association between the presence of eating disorders and the occurrence of problematic internet use behavior independent of the effect of body mass index. The positive association between bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder with problematic internet use is manifested to a greater extent in women compared to men, while depression is a statistically significant mediating variable between the existence of eating disorders and problematic internet use. The implications of the findings are considered important for the appropriate approach to be followed by mental health specialists who work with teenagers and young adults.
