Towards a phenomenological psychotherapy guided by the thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty
Summary:
In the present work, an attempt will be made to outline the conditions of a psychotherapy with a phenomenological orientation guided by the thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In the First Part, after a brief overview of the difference between various forms of psychotherapy compared to the traditional model of psychiatry, the key points of modern thought and Freudian psychoanalysis are described as representative samples of modern thinking. In the Second Part, the focus of the work is on essential points of phenomenology as formulated by Husserl and on pivotal aspects of Merleau-Ponty's thought, which, while inspired by Husserl, differentiates itself through a creative reinterpretation. In the Third Part, the possibility of a psychotherapy is developed that, beyond subjectivism and objectivism characterizing modern thought, does not become trapped in theoretical constructions and technical management but opens up to a conversation directed towards Merleau-Ponty's proposition to "learn to see the world again." In this context, the question is raised regarding the possibility of a phenomenological understanding of the unconscious in contrast to the corresponding Freudian construction.
