Understanding the geographical parameters and the cartographic symbolization for the geographic behavior of Leishmaniasis in Greece: The example of Attica Region.
Summary:
Leishmaniasis is one of the widespread and frequently occurring infectious diseases worldwide. As a disease, it is spread through parasites, which are found in the body of various species of sandflies that are endemic to the country. Therefore, in addition to medical practices to deal with it, the observation and gathering of data on its geographical distribution and dispersion are used as important factors for prevention development of cases. With the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), it is possible to visualize on digital maps the environmental and epidemiological components that favor the geographic behavior of leishmaniasis and to observe the parameters that contribute or not to its spread. Parameters such as climate, land cover, terrain morphology, but also population movements, urbanization, etc., can be characterized as recommended causes. The cartographic representation of the above aims at an easy and interactive 'reading' of the data and a direct visual approach to the causes and factors that investigate the geographical behavior of leishmaniasis. The question of the understanding of these cartographic representations by health professionals is very important and ensures the quality and reliability of the elaborated cartographic product. This is precisely the object of the present research, that is, the development of specifications and the formulation of a methodology for the construction of understandable epidemiological maps that will be addressed mainly to health professionals, aiming at the legible reading of the impression of the phenomenon of the geographical behavior of leishmaniasis, with a geographical paradigm of Attica Region.
