Mental Health, Parental Stress and Perceived Social Support of Parents of Children with Cerebral Palsy
Summary:
This study aimed to investigate the mental health, parental stress and perceived social
support of parents of children with cerebral palsy, in relation to variables, such as the
gender the age of the parent, and the severity of the child’s disability. The sample
consisted of 51 parents of children with cerebral palsy, including 39 females and 12
males. Inclusion criteria for participation required participants to be parents of a child
with cerebral palsy, attending primary education. For the study of parental mental
health, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) (Lovibond & Lovibond,
1995) was administered; for the study of parental stress, the Parental Stress Scale
(PSS) Berry & Jones, 1995) was used; and for the study of perceived social support,
the Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) (Zimet et al.,
1988) was administered, along with demographic data. Findings revealed lower levels
of mental health among younger parents, and confirmed the correlation between low
mental health and increased parental stress, as well as high parental stress and low
perceived social support. These findings can contribute to a better understanding of
the psychological needs of parents of children with cerebral palsy, aiming to provide
them with appropriate support.
