Museums and Mental Health: Investigating the contribution of museums and their collections to enhancing the social fabric during periods of loneliness and lockdowns
Summary:
This thesis investigates the contribution of museums and their collections to improving the mental health of individuals and societies, focusing on the issue of combating loneliness. As museums are at the service of the society and human-oriented, in recent years they have made efforts to promote the health of individuals and societies by addressing issues that threaten public health and providing assistance to those in need. The therapeutic functions of museums can be used to contribute in this direction and to support the efforts of other institutions to strengthen social capital. Regarding the phenomenon of loneliness, which increased significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, museums, functioning as meeting and socializing places, can help people who feel lonely to overcome this difficulty and improve their well-being. The design and implementation of an educational activity, in the context of the present study, aimed at reducing the feeling of loneliness and targeted at individuals aged eighteen to twenty-five, falls within the framework of the aforementioned efforts.
