Specific Learning Disability in Mathematics
Summary:
The aim of this study was to examine Dyscalculia, which in the
recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) by the American Psychiatric Association is classified under the
category of Neurodevelopmental Disorders within the broader scope of
Specific Learning Disorders in Mathematics. Extensive scientific research
regarding the etiology, difficulties, and characteristics displayed by
students with specific learning difficulties in mathematics provides the
theoretical framework for developing appropriate interventions. Learning
theories, as well as scientifically supported practices for addressing these
difficulties, serve as a bridge between theory and practice. Additionally,
the role of individualized knowledge approaches or learning profiles, as an
essential element in structuring a personalized program, is approached
through assessment procedures. Finally, the adequate training of educators,
as well as differentiated teaching and psychosocial support for students
with specific learning difficulties, become necessary and subject to
discussion.
