Video Games, Gaming Disorder and Aggression in Greek Adolescents
Summary:
Gaming Disorder was officially acknowledged as a clinical condition by the World Health Organization within the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in 2018. The present study examines the relationship of video game exposure, as indicated by the daily gaming time and the weekly gaming frequency, and Gaming Disorder with aggression in 244 adolescents from Greece. Participants were administered the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale - Short Version (Lemmens et al., 2015), the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire - Short Version (Buss & Perry, 1992) which encompasses four factors (physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger and hostility), as well as a demographic data collection form which contained information regarding video game use. According to the results, the prevalence rate of Gaming Disorder in the sample was 0.4%. At the same time, systematic correlations were observed between daily gaming time and weekly gaming frequency with the severity of Gaming Disorder, as well as the severity of Gaming Disorder with all dimensions of aggression. Additionally, it was found that weekly gaming frequency and hostility can predict the severity of Gaming Disorder. These findings are discussed in the context of recent literature and hold implications for the development of targeted prevention and intervention programs tailored to address Gaming Disorder among adolescents.
