Psychological Adjustment of Adolescent Students With Immigrant Background in relation to School Climate and Cultural Orientations
Summary:
The purpose of the present study was to examine the adaptation of adolescent students with immigrant background from the perspective of mental resilience. Specifically, psychological adjustment (depression, anxiety, emotional symptoms) of students with a migrant background was examined, while taking into account the school climate where they study (equality and inclusion, cultural pluralism) and their cultural orientations (national, ethnic. Intergroup). The sample included 430 first and second high school students from schools in Attica, as well as 564 native classmates. The results showed that the psychological adjustment did not differ between students with and without an immigrant background. Also, it seemed that only the climate of equality and inclusion and gender are related to the indicators of psychological adjustment. Regarding the cultural orientations, ontly intergroup orientation was significantly associated with emotional symptoms. National, ethnic and intergroup orientation were significantly associated with climate of equality and inclusion. Cultural orientations appeared to mediate the relationship between thw school climate of equality and inclusion and the psychological adjustment. Girls with an immigrant background experienced greater difficulties of psychological adjustment compared to boys and higher levels of national and intergroup orientation.
