Sense of Efficacy and Professional Quality of Life based on Teachers' Perceptions
Summary:
The present study examined the relationship between teachers' sense of efficacy and compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Furthermore, it aimed to examine the existence of potential differences of the aforementioned variables according to gender, age, level of education and years of teaching experience. The sample consisted of 332 teachers across various levels of education. Participants completed the Professional Quality of Life Scale, the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale, as well as a demographic characteristics questionnaire. The results of the study showed that there is a statistically significant existence of a low negative correlation between teachers' sense of self-efficacy and burnout as well as a statistically significant existence of a moderate positive correlation between self-efficacy in relation to compassion satisfaction. In addition, statistically significant differences were observed between men and women in terms of secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction, while at the same time statistically significant differences were found in terms of teachers' sense of self-efficacy according to their years of service. Findings of the study revealed a significant, yet weak, negative correlation between teachers’ sense of efficacy and burnout, as well as a significant, moderate positive correlation between teachers’ sense of efficacy and compassion satisfaction. Finally, compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress seem to differ in terms of gender while teachers’ sense of efficacy seems to differ in terms of years of experience. Findings can contribute to a better understanding of teachers’ sense of efficacy and the dimensions of professional quality of life.
