Parental Acceptance/Rejection and Cyberbullying in Adolescence: The role of Peer Attachment
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parental acceptance/rejection, peer attachment, and cyberbullying/cybervictimization and to examine the moderating and mediating role of peer attachment in the relationship between parental acceptance/rejection and cyberbullying/cybervictimization. The sample consisted of 557 individuals (58.8% girls, Mage = 16.4) attending urban high schools in Greece. The results showed a negative correlation between parental acceptance and cyberbullying/cybervictimization, a positive correlation between parental rejection and cyberbullying/cybervictimization, a positive correlation between parental acceptance and peer attachment, a negative correlation between parental rejection and peer attachment, and a negative correlation between peer attachment and cyberbullying/cybervictimization. Moderation analysis showed that when trust in peers was low, maternal indifference/neglect had a statistically significant effect on cyberbullying, whereas when trust in peers was moderate or high, maternal indifference/neglect did not have a statistically significant relationship with cyberbullying. Mediation analysis showed either a full or a partial mediating effect of peer attachment on the relationship between parental acceptance/rejection and cybervictimization. This study is the first to examine the relationships between these specific variables and the moderating and mediating role of peer attachment in the aforementioned relationship.
