Investigation of the relationship between Perceived Stress and Psychological Resilience of Parents of Children in School-age and Adolescence with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between perceived stress and psychological resilience of parents of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in school-age and adolescence and to examine the predictive value of psychological resilience on parents' perceived stress. In addition, the study aimed to investigate any differences in perceived stress and psychological resilience based on certain demographic variables of parents and children. Participants included 44 parents of school-aged and adolescent children diagnosed with ASD from Athens in Greece. The Perceived Stress Scale-10, PSS-10 (Cohen et al., 1983) was administered to investigate stress and the Brief Resilience Scale, BRS (Smith et al., 2008) was administered to study psychological resilience. Demographic data were collected, too. The results showed a strong negative correlation between parents' perceived stress and psychological resilience. Psychological resilience was also found to be a strong predictor of parents' perceived stress. Furthermore, it was found that there is a statistically significant difference between the genders in terms of perceived stress, with mothers reporting higher levels of perceived stress than fathers. These findings provide evidence for the protective role of psychological resilience on perceived parental stress, useful for designing intervention programs, and highlight the importance of care coordination for systematic support for parents.
