Smartphone as an evocative object and new forms of anxiety: A qualitative investigation through digital diaries
Summary:
This thesis explores the emotional attachment that young adults (20-28 years old) have developed with their smart phones and the new forms of anxiety that have emerged due to their daily usage by applying the theory of transitional objects/evocative objects (Winnicott, 1971 ̇ Bollas, 2009 ̇ Turkle, 2011b). The methodology followed was qualitative, namely, content analysis of digital diaries, which were completed by twelve participants during one month, followed by supplementary interviews. Some of the key findings of the research were that smart phones act as transitory objects/evocative objects, since their use is increased in times of loneliness, stress, awkwardness and boredom. In addition to their use as tools, their dimensions as a means of communication, discharge and escape from reality are also important. Contemporary forms of techno-stress, which arise from the condition of permanent connectivity, were also identified, such as anxiety and guilt from excessive mobile phone use, anxiety about permanent availability and nomophobia. Finally, considering that smart phone use is often carried out unconsiously/automatically, this research highlighted how the systematic recording of the way smartphone is used can contribute to the regulation of user-device relationship, acting as a tool of digital empowerment.
