Depression, loneliness and resilience of children’s and adolescents’ parents
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the levels of parents’ loneliness, depression and resilience, their correlation with individual factors, such as gender, age and the presence of children with special educational needs, as well as the predictive role of loneliness, resilience and age on parents’ depressive levels, two years after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The sample consisted of 152 parents, 30 of whom were men and 122 women. Participation criterion was to have at least one child of preschool to adolescent age. To investigate depression, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9; Spitzer et al., 1999) was administered, to assess loneliness the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, 1996) was administered and to estimate resilience the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS; Smith et al., 2008) was administered, while the demographic data were collected by an improvised questionnaire. The results indicated the correlation between parents’ depression and loneliness, resilience and gender, the predictive role of these variables on depression and the mediation of resilience on the predictive relation between loneliness and depression. These results emphasize the importance of psychosocial interventions’ implementation targeting decrease in loneliness and enhancement of resilience, with the ultimate aim of managing crisis.
