Critical Pedagogy and Music Education: the case of Musical Improvisation
Summary:
Critical Pedagogy is a philosophy of education and a pedagogical approach that was developed in the middle of the 20th century. It proposes a radical educational model, aiming at the expression of the students’ voice and the critical interpretation of the educational and social reality. This paper examines the link between critical pedagogy and musical improvisation theories and practices through a systematic literature review of music education articles. The review aims to a) synthesize the points of critique of the prevailing ideologies surrounding formal music education institutions, b) identify the fundamental connection between musical improvisation and the emancipatory principles of Critical Pedagogy and c) expose the various practices and educational results which take place in the process of musical improvisation through the lens of Critical Pedagogy from the points of view of both the students and the educators.
