The ralation of wildfires and climate crisis in the Mediterranean Basin
Summary:
This paper examines the relationship between forest fires and the climate crisis in the Mediterranean basin. After making a general reference to the recent outbreak of fires in the Mediterranean, the second chapter makes a reference to the climate and climate zones, to the particular characteristics of the Mediterranean climate which, in combination with the climate cycles of the Earth, explain why fires in the Mediterranean are not a recent phenomenon, but a natural phenomenon that has always been found in the region. In addition, in the third chapter, statistics of the fires that have struck the Mediterranean in the past and current decade are presented and the causes of their occurrence are examined. The fourth chapter examines the impact of climate change, which, although traced back to the mechanisms of the Earth, today causes concern due to its combination with the greenhouse effect that exacerbates its consequences and leads to the outbreak of fires, the desertification of areas and the exposure to danger of endemic species. The fifth chapter presents policies and actions concerning the states, organizations and citizens for the transition to a green circular economy with low emissions and more effective measures for the protection of wildfires. Finally, in the sixth chapter, the conclusions and proposals of this paper are presented, which will lead to the reduction of forest fires and the decrease of their consequences in the Mediterranean basin.
