Summary:
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary (1923-2023) of the signing of the Treaty
of Lausanne and the Population Exchange Convention between Greece and Turkey and
the arrival of refugees from Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace in Greece, this diploma
thesis develops the proposal for the conceptual design of an anniversary temporary
exhibition on the settlement and new life of refugees in Western Thrace. The exhibition
was designed around specific exhibits of the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, which is
located in Alexandroupolis. The purpose of the exhibition is to preserve the collective
memory and pay tribute to the uprooted Greeks from the Unforgettable Homelands and
the refugees who created a new life in Western Thrace, always looking at the homeland
they left behind.
The first part of the paper examines the concept of memory, individual, collective,
traumatic, and its contribution to the formation of identities. The representation and
preservation of memory through museum environments is also presented. The
explanation of these terms helps to provide a deeper understanding of the importance
of memory and the need for its preservation by specific social groups, especially from
the 20th century onwards. These concepts are repeated throughout the paper and
intertwined within the museum space.
The second part presents the proposal for the conceptual design of the temporary
exhibition. The visitor of the exhibition will have the opportunity to be informed,
through the exhibits and with the help of modern technological means, about the events
that led to the Population Exchange , the objects that the refugees brought with them,
the new life they created in Western Thrace, their professional occupations and their
contribution to the economic, social and cultural sectors. The exhibition was structured
and based on the dictates of museology.
