Summary:
The present thesis deals with the risks (natural and man-made) that threaten museums in the modern era. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the reasons for the protection of museums are examined, the protection providers are presented and the difference between protection and security (in the terms of 'security' and 'safety') is analysed in detail. After providing the basic terminology, the different types of risks that may threaten museums are analysed, as well as the impact that each of them may bring upon employees, visitors, building and its contents (exhibits and equipment). Afterwards, the way of managing these risks is examined in order to produce the Emergency Plan, a crucial element of Risk Management in museums. In the practical part of the thesis, the case study (Museum of Karditsa City) is presented, whose collections undoubtedly constitute an important part of the history of the city and the wider region. Through bibliographical references, study of archives, field study, photographs and data from various institutions, an attempt is made to analyse and manage the risks that threaten the museum. Finally, the museum's Risk Assessment Table is prepared. The Risk Management for the Museum of Karditsa City could be the occasion for the completion of the Emergency Plan, for which it has been struggling for a long time.
