Early Byzantine Rhodes. The center and the periphery. Study of history and topography.
Summary:
Rhodes, the largest island of the Greek Archipelago, is located in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The island’s important geographical position contributed to its artistic and intellectual flourishing. Based on the large number of findings, it was an important center of the Early Byzantine period, as evidenced by the size of the Early Byzantine basilicas and the number of settlements identified. This thesis examines the history and topography of the center and periphery of Rhodes during the Early Byzantine period. It deals with the systematic recording and critical study of the material remains and written sources of the monuments of the city of Rhodes during the period under study. Emphasis is also placed on the monuments of the countryside from the 5th to the 7th century AD.
The main objective of the study is to present these monuments (basilicas, baths, workshops, funerary monuments) through the description of their remains and their conservation status. At the same time, topographical identification and study of the written sources of each monument within the geographical boundaries of the island of Rhodes are reported. Modern coordinate recording methods, topographical, satellite and geophysical maps are used in the preparation of this survey. In addition, unpublished photographic material of the various finds and monuments in their present form is presented. Finally, the issue of the density of rural monuments in relation to coastal and inland settlements and settlements on the site of ancient acropolis of Rhodes is examined.
