The historical centre of Komotini as an open- air museum. Museological enhancement proposal
Summary:
Komotini is a culturally emerging city, mainly recognized through the uniqueness of its multicultural social structure. This thesis aims to present and document the historical centre of Komotini as an open- air museum, as well as to recommend practices that can contribute to its cultural emergence.
The first chapters, contain a theoretical approach and a presentation of concepts and situations, relevant to the topic of this thesis, such as: open-air museums and the role of cities as open- air museums, comparison between the museological practices of two different historical cities’ centres, challenges faced by regions with mixed populations, and in this case the case of the minority of Western Thrace. This is followed by the historical development of Komotini, as well as the monuments’ one, which have been defined as 'exhibits' for the interpretation of the city as an open-air museum. Then, the region of the historical centre is delineated, and cultural expressions, both intangible and tangible, located within it, are being tracked down.
This is followed by an evaluation of the role and relations between the monuments-exhibits and the people, based on the public survey conducted. After a review of the current state of the ways that the city is culturally being managed, the proposed actions that can contribute to a better management, with the aim of enhancing it, are analysed. The development of the enhancement proposal is culminated with the description of a proposed cultural walk, within the historic centre of the city, with the intention of creating a connection it with its people.
