The use of caffeine as a therapeutic treatment in apnea of premature infants
Summary:
Introduction: Premature infants are at increased risk of complications after birth because their organs have not fully developed. One of the most common diagnoses in premature infants is apnea. At research level, there is not a sufficient number of researches to investigate the effects of apnea in premature infants. It has been recorded that one of the substances that can work positively in dealing with apnea of prematurity is caffeine. Purpose: The investigation of the effectiveness of caffeine administration as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of apnea in premature infants. Methodology: There was chosen the bibliographic review method. The search for articles was carried out through databases of electronic journals such as ERIC, PubMed and Scopus. A total of 16 articles were studied in which there was full access to the main text, they were in the English language, they were published after 2005 and they were primary research. Results: It was found that the administration of caffeine has a positive effect on the treatment of apnea in premature infants. At the same time, positive effects for the health of the newborn were recorded, such as the improvement of oxygen, longer sleep duration, the reduction of the risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, as well as the higher probability of extubation of the infant. Furthermore, it was observed that if the recommended doses of administration are followed, then there is no risk of complications in premature infants with apnea due to the administration of caffeine. Likewise, no significant association was observed between the administration of caffeine to preterm infants and the occurrence of adverse developmental complications.
