Indicators of welfare level in farm animals during the visit at the farms
Summary:
During the period from the beginning of November 2023 until the middle of January
2024 forty-four visits were made to farm animal units,
of sheep, goats and cattle where their level of well-being was checked in terms of
three factors.
The factors checked in the visits were the presence of animals with pathological conditions of the udder, the presence of animals suffering from lameness and the presence of
animals showing pathological conditions of the skin.
The animal population was recorded at each farm and thereafter
those suffering on the day of the visit were recorded. Then they were asked the producers for the presence of these diseases during the last quarter as well and for the exact number of animals that suffered, and were added to the sufferers.
It was studied separately the presence of related diseases and the
percentage of animals infected. Then conclusions were drawn and
approaches are proposed to improve the level of well-being of these farm animals.
In the research, an analytical approach was taken to the definition of the well-being of farm
animals and the protocols applied for the animal species examined
in order to draw as safe conclusions as possible.
