The securitization of Islam in US foreign policy in the Middle East
Summary:
This thesis aims to present the securitization of Islam in the foreign policy of the United States in the Middle East, which took place after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. For the purposes of this study, the presidencies of George Bush and Barack Obama are examined through the lens of the Copenhagen School, a distinct approach to the study of security phenomena that contrasts with the prevailing Realist perspective. This work presents the ways and reasons why President Bush chose to highlight an existing security issue, terrorism, as an existential threat to the core of American identity, achieving the securitization of Islam through the dichotomy of "us" and "them." At the same time, it presents President Obama's efforts to reverse this policy, as well as the reasons for this shift.
