Προς μια εννοιολόγηση του «επείγοντος» ως πολιτικής έννοιας
Translated title:
Towards a conceptualization of the "emergency" as a political concept
Summary:
This thesis revisits the concept of επείγον ([epíγon] emergency, urgency), especially as it becomes a dominant theme in late modern politics. From the climate emergency to migration, securitization and disaster management, the emergency crystallizes important aspects of both neoliberal governance and respective resistances. I argue that, while the concept tends to be presented as a neutral term, it is an “essentially contested concept” (Connoly 1983) that performs important functions within political and social discourses and practices. Drawing on uses of the emergency in medicine, legal theory, humanitarian aid and neoliberal governance, I focus on key dimensions (temporality, necessity, hierarchy, and liminality) and normative functions of the concept. The aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the emergency, highlighting it’s dynamic as a political concept.
