The contribution of racial and eugenic theories in shaping the history and philosophy of biomedical sciences in Greece. Proposal for the design of an exhibition to highlight the social construction of racial discrimination
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the influence that theories about the racial superiority of certain population groups, as well as the theory of the continuity of the Greek race, eugenic perceptions, and theories of degeneration had on the history and philosophy of biomedical sciences in Greece. This is illustrated by the operation of the first university medical museums from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The case study chosen for this phenomenon is the Anthropological Museum of the University of Athens.

The thesis is divided into three parts.

In the first part, the approaches related to racial and eugenic theories, as well as their influence on the shaping of the history and philosophy of biomedical sciences in Greece, are analyzed.

In the second part, the impact of these theories on the collection policy, exhibition, ideology, and operation of one of the first museums established at the University of Athens, the Anthropological Museum, is examined. For the retrieval of relevant information, research was conducted in archival material, focusing on the archive of the Rector's Speeches of the University of Athens.

In the third part, based on the data collected from the archival and secondary literature review, the design of an exhibition is proposed. This exhibition aims to highlight the social construction of the concept of racial superiority and to promote public communication of science to combat racial prejudices.
