Interactions in the Multicultural Classroom: Primary Education Teachers' Views on Intercultural Conflicts and Coping Practices.
Summary:
Migration constitutes a phenomenon of global significance. One of its ramifications is the demographic heterogeneity within schools. This results in the emergence of new complexities and demands in the school environment. The present quantitative research explores the relationships between Greek students and foreign students from the perspective of educators in Primary Education, as well as the strategies employed by educators to help foreign students smoothly integrate into the social fabric of the school microcosm. The research utilized a questionnaire graded according to the Likert scale. A total of 121 educators of public schools from any part of Greece participated in the study during the period from April 2022 to May 2022.
The results of the research showed that prejudices and stereotypes can influence the friendly relationships between foreign and native children. Specifically, prejudices regarding different ethnic backgrounds can lead to isolation or rejection by native children. Therefore, the results indicate the importance of the need for open and tolerant educational communities that promote respect and understanding of diversity.
Regarding the second part of the research aim, it included the investigation of the strategies employed by educators for the smooth integration of foreign students. The smooth integration of migrants and refugees into society can be achieved through education. Therefore, in a multicultural society and in a heterogeneous school, the acceptance of diversity is imperative. The school should be a fertile ground for the coexistence of students with different languages, cultures, and religions.
