Translated title:
“Minime malas ut sint malae, the construction of meretrix in Plautus”
Summary:
Meretrices are considered as main characters in Fabulae Palliatae. The importance of this stock character can be understood, since from the 21 of Plautus’s comedies only 6 of them do not include a meretrix in their plot (Amphitruo, Aulularia, Captivi, Casina, Stichus, Trinummus) and from the six survived terentian palliatae, only the plot of Phormio doesn’t include a meretrix as a character at all. When we are thinking of an hetaira, as a part of the comic plot we should keep in mind that this character should be considered as definitely “bad”. First of all, in order to construct this comic type, it is necessary to give a definition of the so-called “malitia”, since this term is considered to be multidimensional. After that i will continue with the presentation of the three of the most “vicious” and “dark” plautine meretrices (Phronesium from Truculentus, the two Bacchides from the homonymous comedy and Philocomasium from Miles Gloriosus). By citing the most apt passages of these three comedies, the difference between the aforementioned meretrices and the pseudo – meretrices that i will analyze next, will become obvious. I chose three of the pseudo - meretrices (Ampelisca from Rudens, Melaenis from Cistellaria and Planesium from Curculio). The differences between these two types of plautine hetairae are prominent. After that close reading i will do a flashback at one of Plautus’s exemplars, Menander, in order to be simpler for us to comprehend how Plautus handled not only his meretrix, but also his prototype
