Down syndrome and congenital heart diseases
Summary:
Down syndrome is a common chromosomal disorder found in 1-1.4 out of 1,000 live
newborns. Down syndrome, like other diseases or abnormalities, such as cancer,
overweight or obesity, and HIV, among others, not only involves changes in the patient's
body, but also in their social and psychological environment. As is well known, there is a
lot of misinformation about people with Down syndrome, who also suffer from stigma.
Therefore, it is very important to produce and differentiate knowledge about this
syndrome. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease in patients with Down syndrome
remains stable over time, with ventricular septal defect as the most common heart defect.
Inclusive education that is tailored to the unique needs of people with Down syndrome,
as well as those with congenital heart disease, is paramount to fostering a supportive
learning environment. societies can work within the framework to create a safe
environment that values and includes people with both the syndrome and the condition,
reducing prejudice and promoting empathy
