Summary:
Medieval Europe of the late 13th and early 14th century is marked by the disintegration of the feudal system. This stigma have the characteristics of a society dying economically and socially and aspects of a society being born. The first being focused on the fief and the second based on trade and its development. One can observe an unknown till then development of productivity utilizing equally new technical means and methods, further incentives and intensity of production based on sales, new sectors and specialties, more intense use of money. These changes are also distinct in people's social, interpersonal and work relationships, affecting at the same time political life of the time.
This paper examines the net of social relations in Florence through the example of Wool Guild (Arte della Lana) having as basic material the statute of the guild of 1317-1319. The central aim is to approximate as closely as possible the stratification and the relations between various layers within the guild, but also the character of the guild of that period. Having as central questions if guild was a way of organizing production, rules for regulating social relations, or the basis for governing the city.
