The correlation between perceived stress and burnout among pediatricians of the First Pediatric Clinic of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, at "Aghia Sophia" Children's Hospital
Summary:
Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between perceived stress
and burnout among pediatricians of the First Pediatric Clinic of National and Kapodistrian
University of Athens (NKUA), at "Aghia Sophia" Children's Hospital.
Subjects-Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted at the "Aghia Sophia"
Children's Hospital, where 104 pediatricians participated (15.4% men and 84.6%
women), with an average age of 33.5 years. The participants completed three
questionnaires, the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Questionnaire
(PSS-14 Item) and the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (Oldenburg Burnout Inventory -
OLBI-16 Item). The analysis was performed comparing two groups, pediatric specialists
(N=48) and pediatric residents (N=56). The necessary parametric or non-parametric tests
were used for the statistical analysis and a multiple linear regression analysis model was
used to evaluate various characteristics as predictors of burnout.
Results: A statistically significant difference was observed between pediatric
specialists and pediatric residents in perceived stress (p<0.004) and burnout (p<0.001) as
well as its subcategories, i.e. disengagement (p<0.001) and exhaustion (p<0.001).
Specifically, pediatric residents appear to have a higher score on these measurement tools. Regarding the multiple linear regression model it was observed that only perceived stress is statistically significantly correlated with higher levels of burnout by 0.650 units
(p<0.001).
Conclusion: Pediatric residents have higher levels of perceived stress and burnout than
pediatric specialists. The findings of the cross-sectional study showed that there is a
statistically significant positive correlation between perceived stress and burnout among
pediatricians of the First Department of Pediatrics of National and Kapodistrian
University of Athens (NKUA), at "Aghia Sophia" Children's Hospital.
