Proprioception and aging
Summary:
Proprioception is defined as the sense of posture and mobility of the extremities of human body and is attributed to the activity exerted by sensory nerves, being located in the skin, muscles and tissue joints. The current term is further extended to describe physical condition and balance of a human’s organism. It encompasses an apparatus of mechanical receptors, the function of which transmits data to the central nervous system.
The sense of the poorer quality of proprioception in lower extremities increases in time, thereby decreasing the degree of sensitivity that’s being related to the joint position and vibration. Any loss regarding proprioception of the lower extremities, leads to significant loss of balance control and hence mobility problems in elderly people.
Main purpose of proprioception rehabilitation is the strengthening of the bond between the joints and the posture and mobility of the body, along with strengthening of the joint muscular stability. Rehabilitation programmes should include aspects related to reflex education, activity of the brain stem and mental participation, respectively. The ultimate destination relates to stimulation of joint and muscle receptors and the extraction of signals, in the central nervous system level.
Proprioception constitutes a vital factor for controlling the aspect of mobility. The ability for proprioception lessens along time and therefore the levels of balance and postural control dysregulate. Credibility of contrasting proprioception systems continues to be problematic and is attributed to the increased level of variability being exerted by implementation of different methodologies.
