Summary:
Pre-eclampsia is a complication of pregnancy and one of the main causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The word "eclampsia" has its roots in Ancient Greece and comes from the verb of the ancient Greek language "ἐκλάπω" from "ἐκ + λάμπω", in the Hellenistic common ἔκλάμπσις, that is, shine, lightning. The existence of the syndrome has been known since the time of Hippocrates, who uses the word "eclampsia" in the chapter "on aphorisms", trying to describe the sudden onset of fever. He also uses the term "pre-eclampsia" as a kind of poisoning of the pregnant woman. All this in the 5th century BC. And here we are today, 2500 years later, with preeclampsia affecting 5% of pregnant women, responsible for more than 50,000 maternal deaths annually, and involved in 25% of stillbirths and neonatal deaths. But what is pre-eclampsia? How is it created? Why does it appear in some women? Can we predict its appearance, and if so can we do something to prevent it? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the following pages, with data from studies published in large databases such as Pubmed and guidelines from official organizations such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Of course, research data from the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF), which has done a huge amount of research on pre-eclampsia, led by the father of embryology, Kypros Nicolaides, could not be missing.
