The use of foraminifera as indicators of environmental health of Mediterranean coastal and marine ecosystems

The Mediterranean Sea, a region of ecological and economic significance, has faced escalating environmental challenges in recent decades, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of its marine ecosystems. This dissertation delves into a pivotal aspect of marine biomonitoring by focusing on benthic foraminifera, microscopic marine organisms with the potential to serve as invaluable bioindicators. The selection of foraminifera as a focal point arises from their sensitivity to environmental changes, making them reliable indicators of ecological health.
The Mediterranean Sea, with its unique oceanographic and climatic conditions, is particularly susceptible to anthropogenic impacts, including climate change, pollution, and habitat degradation. Recognizing the urgent need for effective bioindicators to assess and monitor the health of marine ecosystems in this crucial region, the suitability of foraminifera is researched for such a role.
The dissertation unfolds by providing a comprehensive review of existing literature, highlighting the ecological importance of foraminifera and their potential as sensitive indicators of environmental changes. Subsequently, the research methodology is detailed, along with field sampling, laboratory analyses, and data interpretation techniques for each study area.
As marine ecosystems worldwide confront escalating threats, the identification and validation of reliable bioindicators become imperative for informed conservation and management strategies.
