Summary:
In the present thesis the preparation of polyurea-crosslinked palladium alginate (X-Pd-Alg-IP) aerogels is presented. The new aerogels are macroporous/mesoporous materials with BET surface areas in the range of 351-361 m2 g-1, while Pd can be in oxidation state II, IV or 0. X-Pd(0)-Alg-IP aerogels were prepared via hydrogenation of X-Pd(II)-Alg-IP with Η2 in water. Hydrogenation does not affect the surface area or the nanostructure of the material. All aerogels were characterized with ATR-FTIR, ICP-MS, nitrogen porosimetry and He pycnometry.
In addition, the effect of different drying methods (supercritical fluid (SCF) CO2 drying or drying from pentane) on the properties of X-Ca-Alg-IP and X-Cu-Alg-IP aerogels was studied. SCF drying provided macroporous/mesoporous aerogels with BET surface areas in the range of 346-370 m2 g-1 (X-Ca-Alg-IP-SCF) and 456-479 m2 g-1 (X-Cu-Alg-IP-SCF), while drying from pentane provided mesoporous aerogels with BET surface areas in the range of 289-332 m2 g-1 (X-Ca-Alg-IP-pent) and 354-375 m2 g-1 (X-Cu-Alg-IP-pent).
